Things that made me smile

Idaho Seatbelt Laws for Children - FAIL

If you want to determine at what age your kids don’t need booster seats, or can sit in the front seat, etc…good luck.

Google points me right to the State of Idaho’s website:  http://itd.idaho.gov/ohs/ChildSafety/index.html

Of course, the link there to “Idaho Code 49-672” is dead.  Surely the “Most Important Points” link answers the question.  Nope.

Maybe the “Current Laws” link in the sidebar takes me to the current laws.  Nope…it takes me to a PDF written by the NTSB on child safety.  BRILLIANT.

I suppose I could Google “Idaho Code 49-672.”  Success!  I found a Justia copy of the Idaho Code:  http://law.justia.com/idaho/codes/49ftoc/490060072.html.

At last!  An answer to my question!

Not so fast.  Here’s the relevant section of the IC.

49-672. PASSENGER SAFETY FOR CHILDREN. (1) No noncommercial motor vehicle operator shall transport a child who is six (6) years of age or younger in a motor vehicle manufactured with seat belts after January 1, 1966, unless the child is properly secured in a child safety restraint that meets the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 213…

Gee.  Thanks State Legislature!  Now I only need to figure out what “federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 213” is.

Back to Google.

Found it!  http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.aspx?section=571.213.

The page has got to be 20-30 printed pages, filled with such wonderful things as:

Limit the resultant acceleration at the location of the accelerometer mounted in the test dummy head as specified in part 572 such that the expression:
[GRAPHIC OF WICKED MATH EQUATION]
shall not exceed 1,000, where a is the resultant acceleration expressed as a multiple of g (the acceleration of gravity), and t 1 and t 2 are any two moments during the impacts.

Seriously?

And they wonder why parents can’t seem to follow the law…
